Overview
Bromley is the largest and south-eastern most London borough, with an estimated LGBT population of 17,731 and 476 same-sex households according to the 2001 census. The borough is made up of 20 wards including Bickley, Biggin Hill, Bromley Common and Keston, Bromley Town, Chelsfield and Pratts Bottom, Chislehurst, Clock House, Copers Cope, Cray Valley East, Cray Valley West, Crystal Palace, Darwin, Farnborough and Crofton, Hayes and Coney Hall, Kelsey and Eden Park, Mottingham and Chislehurst North, Orpington, Penge and Cator, Petts Wood and Knoll, Plaistow and Sundridge, Shortlands and West Wickham.
Political make-up
Bromley is a conservative-controlled council, with 53 of the 60 councillors elected from the Conservative party. The leader of the Council is Stephen Carr, and the Executive is the main decision-making body for the Council. The Mayor for 2010-2011 is George Taylor.
There are three members of parliament for the Bromley area. Bob Stewart, Conservative, serves the Beckenham constituency. Bob Neill, Conservative, serves the Bromley and Chislehurst constituency. Jo Johnson, Conservative, serves the Orpington constituency.
Equality and Diversity
Equality sits within the remit of the leader of the Council within Bromley. Bromley is currently reviewing its Equality Scheme, which is due to be an umbrella scheme for all equalities. The most current scheme does not make reference to sexual orientation.
